Yesterday was the Young Event Horse (YEH) competition at Rebecca. I’ve heard of it but never knew a lot about it. Kelsey, one of the competitors that I’m here with, was competing her gelding in the 5 year old division of the YEH.
The competition starts with a dressage test, specific to YEH. It’s similar to first level with trot and canter lengthenings, and 15 meter circles. Once the dressage test is done, the horse is unsaddled and presented for a conformation. They stand for the judge and then walk and trot in hand. The competitors then have about 20 or 30 minutes to tack back up and warm up for the jumping portion. Prior to their round they can actually school through the course. Although they can’t jump the fences they can go through the water and tour around the course, giving their horse a feel for the area. The jump course includes stadium and cross country type fences, similar to a derby. The horse is judged on it’s gallop, jump, potential as a 4* horse, etc. The whole thing took about an hour from start to finish, and in the end Kelsey won!
